These mosaics are created from uniformly cut tiles

of unaltered gemstone using a technique developed

by the artist. The photographic quality of the images are an illusion formed by the arrangement of subtle color variations within each stone.

Artist's Statement

In developing a method of coaxing subtle images from raw stones, I've tried to bring a new approach to the 2,000 year old art-form of mosaics. Because images are formed from the tiny flaws in the component tiles, the art form has since become known as impressionist mosaics.

This work reflects my personal philosophy that it's the flawed components in the world (including people) that stimulate new ideas and engender change, and these mosaics take their form because of  'defects'  in the gemstones.  Consequently, each mosaic is fundamentally unique and cannot be duplicated. In keeping with the motif of using unadulterated stones, no grouting is used which creates slight imperfections in the alignment of the final pieces. Perfect!

While the end product for this technique can be architectural or framed art, this portfolio is a tribute to the undergoing scientific, cultural and artistic renaissance as the disciplines of art and technology begin to fuse. The religious themes reflect the roots of traditional mosaics, which had their birth in Egyptian god-worship and were taken to their height by the Church.
