| the madonna in carnelian
Carnelian, an amber-hued translucent gemstone
was chosen because of the traditional reference to Mary as being transparently
perfect. Like the image of Jesus in Jasper, it plays on the whimsy of the
Madonna's face being so often spotted in rock formations, tree bark and potato
chips.
In this artwork, the image resides within the mosaic of Carnelian
tiles and there is no face visible on either the surface or the back of the
piece. When backlit, however, the haunting image of the Madonna emerges,
casting a warm, amber light into the room.
This piece comprises approximately 600
3/8" Carnelian gemstone and measures 9"x12". It is currently
framed in a gilt edged frame with a built-in light box and is valued at
$25,000.00.
